I'm going to have to get out of the habit of saying that my most recent session is my favorite; but I can't help it. This session is my favorite. No, really. I mean it this time...
When Shelby messaged me saying she was interested in doing a Mommy and Me session for Mother's Day I was so excited. I've known Shelby for years, and her kids are amazing, so I knew it would be a good time. I mean, look that those faces, adorable. Scheduling was a pretty quick process, considering there is nothing else to do, we just needed a pretty day.
The weather was turned out to be amazing. Sunny, temperatures in the 70's, a field and a creek... I mean, it doesn't get more perfect than that.
I had warned Shelby that we would probably end up in the creek to finish the shoot, so she was prepared with extra clothes for the little ones. Thank goodness, because little Eliza was soaked in .435 seconds. I think she was wet before everyone else was even in the creek. I loved photographing her, capturing her little expressions, the way she'd look up at Shelby or bust out laughing every time she threw a rock.
Owen could model for JCrew, he's a pro. I'd say "give me a smile" and he'd smile so big and bright, then "ok, be serious" to which he said "ok, I'm going to pretend I see a wolf over there" and he'd give me a very blue steelish look instantly. He kept me laughing the whole shoot. He found what he initially thought was a very rare dinosaur tooth in the creek; but then told me it was just a broken crab claw... bummer. He did teach me a lot about Aqua Man, and how he could use a stick he found to make a "water tornado", a cane, or a gun. "It's a gun now, you can take my picture with it".
I'm so grateful for the opportunity to capture these little moments. Every time someone trust me to do a session for them I have such a mix of emotions. It's a mix of anxiety, hoping the images turn out well, and so much excitement that I can barely sit still. I absolutely love this family, and am so thankful to have been able to celebrate Mother's Day with an amazing mother and her two really awesome kids.
Shelby, on Mother's Day (and everyday), I hope you know what an amazing mother you are. You and Casey have two of the sweetest, kindest, funniest kids I know. They are so smart, and bright and the world is better with them in it. I hope you take a moment to appreciate the fact that you made two freaking people! I mean... people... you did that. You're amazing, and beautiful, and funny, and smart, and patient, and so kind, and I'm so so lucky to know you. I hope you have an amazing Mother's Day, you deserve it.
