When most people think about posting on social media, they think about followers, likes, or maybe even making money online. But something I didn’t expect when I started sharing more consistently was how much it would impact me personally.

Posting online has a funny way of stretching you in ways you didn’t plan for. Here are three surprising side effects of putting yourself out there on social media.

1. It’s a Great Way to Develop Public Speaking Skills

Talking to a camera might feel awkward at first. You might stumble over your words, start over a dozen times, or feel like you have no idea what to say.

But the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Creating videos regularly is basically practice for public speaking. You learn how to organize your thoughts quickly, explain ideas clearly, and communicate with confidence. Over time you start sounding more natural and comfortable on camera.

It’s like having a daily mini public speaking workshop right in your car, kitchen, or wherever you film your content.

2. You Doom Scroll Less

One of the biggest surprises is that posting can actually make you consume less social media.

When you’re thinking about creating content, editing clips, writing captions, and responding to comments, your relationship with social media changes. Instead of endlessly scrolling, you start thinking more like a creator.

You notice trends, pay attention to storytelling, and think about what might inspire your next post. Your time online becomes more intentional rather than passive.

And honestly, that shift alone can be pretty refreshing.

3. You Start Caring Less About What Other People Think

Putting yourself on the internet forces you to confront something many of us struggle with: the fear of what other people think.

The first few posts can feel terrifying. You might wonder who’s watching, who’s judging, or what people will say.

But something interesting happens over time.

You realize that most people are too busy living their own lives to analyze yours. And the more you show up authentically, the stronger your self-confidence becomes. You start trusting your voice, your ideas, and your creativity.

Each post becomes a small act of courage. And those small acts add up.

Bonus Side Effect: You Meet the Most Supportive People

One of the most surprising parts of sharing online is the community that forms around it.

Sometimes the people cheering you on aren’t the ones you expected. Friends and family might not always understand what you’re building or why you’re doing it.

But strangers on the internet? They often show up in ways that are incredibly supportive. They comment encouragement, share your content, celebrate your wins, and remind you that what you’re doing matters.

It’s a pretty special thing.

Show Up Anyway

If you’ve been thinking about posting but keep holding back, here’s a little encouragement: just show up anyway.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You just have to start.

You might develop new skills, gain confidence, meet amazing people, and discover parts of yourself you didn’t know were there.

So why not?
